Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as Physiatry, is a broad medical speciality dedicated to relieving Pain, restoring function, preventing disability, and improving the quality of life of individuals affected by musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and other chronic medical conditions.
Physiatrists are experts in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, spine-related conditions, sports injuries, neuropathic pain and other acute and chronic pain conditions. The speciality embraces cutting-edge technologies, including musculoskeletal ultrasonography, fluoroscopy-guided spinal procedures, radiofrequency ablation, electrodiagnostic medicine, regenerative therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell-based treatments, robotics, biofeedback, virtual reality, wearable technologies, and artificial intelligence to deliver precise, personalized and evidence-based care. Other conditions treated by physiatrist include stroke, spinal cord injury, nerve injuries, amputation, cerebral palsy, Parkinsons & burn injuries.
PMR focuses on restoring ability, promoting independence, facilitating social and vocational reintegration, and enabling every individual to achieve the highest possible level of function and participation in society.
